Turtle Fest in Punta Mita

Turtle Fest …

local ninos learn
about Banderas Bay
sea turtles

On Saturday, December 13th the first ever Turtle Fest was held at the plaza in the Village of Emilano Zapata (just next to Punta de Mita) in Riviera Nayarit. Children from the schools of Punta de Mita, Emiliano Zapata, Higuera Blanca, and La Cruz de Hunacaxtle participated in the after school program (PeaceMexico education programs) and made drawings and learned all about the ecology of turtles on our beaches.

Special food from around the world showing how far the turtles can travel (India, Japan) was for sale along with beverages. The Plaza was decorated with the children's pictures, and posters from Semarnat with information about species, life cycles, nesting, endangerment surrounded the structure. Games for all who attended were staffed by the children. These included: 1) a table where people put on diving flippers and googles, and learned to swim like turtles; 2) a table where people learned to navigate to and from a point without a compass, like turtles do; 3) a table where people could feel the paper mache' shells made, and worn, by the children, to learn about the different types of turtles. Money raised by the children at this event will go to the Litibu Turtle Project. The children came to Litibu and learned from the biologist here. It is the hope that these children will grow up to become turtle protectors, and they will teach their parents and extended families about the turtles.

One of the posters made by the children and decorating the kiosko at the plaza said in English "we like to learn about the turtles and will try not to eat their eggs." Another poster had these words: "turtles live to be 200, if we help save them." Education in action. Learning conservation, english, biology, and charity. Awesome event. Many thanks go to the many adult volunteers, high school students from CEMAT (a conservation group) and teachers who participated.

Punta Mita Foundation fund raiser success.

Punta de Mita Fundraiser Success!

On Dec 6th we attended the get together on ther roof-top of the Cafe des Artiste at El Anclote beach. It was the spectacular setting for the Punta de Mita Foundation Fundraiser on Saturday Night. Approximately 85 people attended the event which also was a tropical evening 'welcome home' to many of the part-time residents of the area. Owner Thierry Bloute and his incredible staff hosted the event with incredible canapes and regional cocktails and wine. Artisans and artist offered pieces for sale to support the work of the Foundation. Delicate pearl jewelry, ceramic pieces, and canvases large and small provided a backdrop of imagination to the hum of friends greeting friends.

As the evening progressed, a film displayed the many works supported by the foundation this year: recycling programs in Punta de Mita, Emilano Zapata, and Sayulita; education and after school programs in Higuera Blanca and Emilano Zapata; Social Services in several local communities; and the Litibu Turtle Sanctuary. Sayulita's Tracie Willis and Recicla Sayulita was featured in the film, as well as the Costa Verde International School for the scholarship support it receives. PeaceMexico, another receipient of Foundation grants, was represented by the school children who performed traditional dances in vivid costumes.

The Punta de Mita Foundation serves as a catalyst for much of the needed community, cultural, infrastructure and future vision for this Southern end of Riveria Nayairt. Only one year old, the outreach of the philanthropy is limited only by the base of funds contributed. While PV and Bucerias have a strong and developing base of=2 0charities serving many deserving causes, the PdM Foundation is a major umbrella organization for many efforts from A to Z. It is the hope of the founders of this organization to serve communities from Bucerias to San Pancho, with an eventual reach into the mountain communities of this area. In its first year of funding, the Foundation has provided nearly $250,000 to community based projects through its mini-grant programs and a Smart Growth Study for this area. One current leadership project is bringing stakeholders together for the creation of a plaza/malecon area fin the re-vitalized El Anclote zone for the benefit of residents, visitors and businesses.

As a fledgling but vital effort, everyone is welcome to participate in the funding and success of the Foundation. For more information about goals and program, to donate or volunteer, please visit the website: http://www.puntademitafoundation.org/ or http://www.pdmfdn.org/. As we share this corner of paradise, many hands are needed. Many thanks to all guests at this event, and the artist and businesses that donated to the evening's success.

Turtle release program in Riviera Nayarit

Oct 2008, Bucerias

Local realtor helps save our turtles. Carol Davenport, www.dpreimx@yahoo.com a Dallas real estate broker working in the Mexican state of Nayarit, participates in the release of endangered Olive Ridley turtles. Davenport, other Americans and Mexican families work with government agencies to first protect the turtle eggs (which are illegally sold as an aphrodisiac) and then to release the hatchlings into the Pacific Ocean. Only one in 1,000 will survive and return.

Riviera Nayarit, Punta Mita & Sayulita surf breaks

From the far southern longboard breaks of Punta Mita to the beach-breaking tubes at San Pancho to the boat- accessed reefs of Chacala, the state of Nayarit delivers consistent, warm-water surf for all levels. It is renowned as one of the best surf coasts on the planet. Nayarit's waves are smaller in the summer months -- the area's off season -- but even 3-foot waves can provide 20-second rides. Some surfers hire a panga boat ($45 for a quick session to $150 for all-day hunting) to ferry them to distant reef breaks and more remote waves along the Nayarit coast.
Punta Mita offers greatest options with six slowly peeling breaks perfect for lazy-day longboarding. Includes from south to north Los Veneros, Burros, La Lancha, Anclote, El Faro and the Cove. North 45minutes from Punta Mita , the beach-pounding breaks at San Francisco -- known locally as San Pancho -- and Lo de Marco are much less crowded but demand a bit more skill (hint: Bail early or eat sand).
Sayulita offers a great right break for beginners and longboard riders, and a speedy left break for rippers. Paddle softly around the local surfers, and definitely don't drop in on them. Beginners are better off learning the art in the early-morning hours before the tourist-weary local surfers take over the break. For a show, watch the locals put on a display of surfing prowess. Some of those young rippers are international surf stars, and their skills are unrivaled.
Snorkeling can be a challenge along the coast of Nayarit, and especially in Sayulita, because of the relentless waves. But a short stroll south and west of Sayulita's square to the Playa de los Muertos can provide some exceptional snorkeling. The tiny cove is protected from the waves, and a series of large, pelican-painted rocks in the cove provide refuge for an array of multihued ocean critters, including lazy blowfish and darting dorado. Best to bring your own gear if you plan to snorkel. The Playa de los Muertos -- there's a cemetery next to the beach, hence the name -- is a popular escape from the often zany Sayulita beach scene.

Best Christmas Gift Buys... The La Peñita Tianguis*

Located on Jaltemba Bay just north of Puerto Vallarta, La Peñita is great place to visit while visiting Riviera Nayarit. This quiet town comes alive on Thursday mornings during the open air flea markets known as the tianguis.

Most Mexican towns have a weekly flea market but La Peñita’s really stands out from the other tianguis in the area with a dedicated area for local artisans in the center of the square. While most tianguis offer the standard wares such as fresh fruit, shrimp, household items and clothing, the artisans at La Peñita offer something much more making it a great place not only to shop but to bring guests if you are in town for an extended time.

In addition to the local artists such as the Huitchol Indians, known for their amazing and colorful bead work, you can also find artists from cities like Oaxaca offering items normally only found in their locales. There are usually drummers and other musicians playing to add to the festive atmosphere.

Some of the “don’t miss” treasures are:
Jewelry: Most of the jewelry is handmade by the artists who are selling it. You can even watch them make pieces while they tend to their stands. You can find Taxco silver, handmade leather bracelets, beaded Huitchol earrings and brightly colored wooden bangles.
Wood Crafts: Two of the most impressive wood crafts are the ironwood sculptures and the brightly colored, painted wooden bowls. The ironwood, which comes from the deserts of Sonora, is carved into beautiful statues, most often depicting animals. The statues are on average 5-6 inches long although much larger pieces can be found. The wood is sanded to a smooth, rich polish and makes a beautiful addition to any décor.

The hand-painted wooden bowls are vibrant in color with traditional Mexican designs. They come in a variety of sizes, the largest being perfect for making salads or mixing dough.

Wool Rugs: You can find a stunning array of beautifully hand-woven Zapotec wool rugs. The Zapotec Indians originate from an area near Oaxaca and their weaving is world-renowned for the vibrant colors, natural materials and symbolic patterns that reflect their unique culture.

The process of weaving one of these rugs is very time consuming with large, complicated rugs taking up to eight months to make. Zapotec rugs are highly collectible and should be prized for their quality and beauty.

Of course, there are many other types of arts and crafts available at the tianguis, such as hand-woven reed baskets, beaded and velvet purses, straw bags, wooden masks and embroidered clothing. With all of the variety in La Peñita, there is no reason to settle for a generic Christmas gift.

If arts and crafts aren’t quite what you are looking for, you will find many other Mexico specific items to take home and share. Lime squeezers, tortilla presses, vanilla, organic Nayarit coffee and wooden molinillos, or Mexican hot chocolate whisk, all make great gifts.
*Tianguises are what guidebooks sometime refer to as "authentic weekly Indian markets." The word tianguis is mostly used in the central Mexican highlands.

Ostrich Burger?... in Bucerias at the Twisted Rose

Dying for a burger during your Riviera Nayarit visit? Be sure to stop by the Twisted Rose in Bucerias. Opened by Hugh Gaffney, well known to locals from the Shamrock Pub, the Twisted Rose specializes in one thing: burgers. They offer all types of burgers, from the vegetarian Portobello mushroom burger to the exotic crocodile burger.

The cost of the patties ranges from $75 pesos for standard beef to $125 pesos for the ostrich burger and can be customized with a wide variety of toppings. In addition to the wide variety of burgers available (salmon, shrimp, rib eye!), the garden salad stands out from the standard side salads that most restaurants offer in Mexico. Mine came with mushrooms, green peppers and avocado along with a generous portion of blue cheese dressing.

The Twisted Rose also offers live music several nights per week, including live salsa on Saturdays ($30 peso cover charge). Throughout the high season, you can expect a number of fun events such as a Mexican fiesta night and a Halloween party.

The Twisted Rose is located at the corner of Mexico and Hildalgo in Bucerias, just north of the church. For more information or Saturday night reservations, you can contact the restaurant at (322) 146-3023.

Puerto Vallarta Art Walk Resumes on October 29th

First time Riviera Nayarit visitors or those who rarely venture out from their Nuevo Vallarta beach chairs, might not realize that Puerto Vallarta is a major art town with more than 30 galleries that show a wide range of art from eclectic artists all over the world.

The first Old Town Art Walk of the season takes place on October 29th. This year’s art walk consists of sixteen galleries all of which will be decorated with a Day of the Dead theme to celebrate the upcoming holiday, Día de los Muertos, November 1st and 2nd.

Throughout the high season, the art walks are held every Wednesday night from 6-10pm until May 2009. Visitors can view the art exhibits, meet the gallery owners and in some cases the artists as well. Many galleries include wine or cocktails and canapés during the event. The walk takes visitors through the quaint area of Puerto Vallarta often referred to as “Old Town,” although it’s also known as Zona Romantica.
Maps can be picked up at any of the participating galleries as well as many hotels and local businesses. You can also view the map at the Galería Vallarta website at http://galeriavallarta.com/puerto-vallarta/artwalk.htm.
The rich history of art in Mexico extends back several centuries to the well-documented works of the Aztec, Mayan, and Olmec societies. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo cemented Mexico's place in the art world, and today Mexico is home to an amazing variety of fine artists whose work is displayed the world over.
Get up and go see this spectacular art and get some excercise too!

Voting In November Election - Turtle News

Hola,

This from the US Consulate:
Overseas Absentee Voting
Act now to register to vote and request an absentee ballot for the
2008 presidential and general elections!

Eligibility to Vote
Generally, all U.S. citizens 18 years or older who are residing
outside the United States during an election period are eligible to
vote absentee in any election for Federal office. Some states allow
overseas voters to vote in state and local elections as well.
http://www.fvap.gov/

Voting eligibility and residency requirements are determined by the
various U.S. states, and are available on-line at

http://fvap.gov/pubs/vag.html. Your "legal state of residence" for
voting purposes is the state where you last resided immediately prior
to departure from the United States. Voting rights extend to overseas
citizens even though they may no longer own property or have other
ties to their last state of residence, and even if their intent to
return to that state may be uncertain. For those who have never
resided in the United States, sixteen states allow certain U.S.
citizens to register where a parent or spouse would be eligible to
vote.

Voter Registration & Requesting an Absentee Ballot
Voters who have not yet registered to vote and requested an absentee
ballot should do so now.

1. Complete the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) using the
instructions for your state in the Voting Assistance Guide. You may
pick up a hard copy of the FPCA from any U.S. Embassy or Consulate, or
use the online version.

2. Sign, date and mail the completed FPCA to the address listed
in the Voting Assistance Guide. If you are sending the FPCA through
international mail, please affix appropriate airmail postage.
Alternatively, you can print out a postage-paid address label and ask
any U.S. Embassy or Consulate to send your FPCA postage-paid through
diplomatic pouch or the military postal service. Some states allow
voters to send in the FPCA by fax, but they also require you to send
in the hard copy by mail. Follow your state's regulations precisely.

3. Send in a new FPCA if you have moved or changed your name
since the last time you voted.

4. Check your state's voter registration verification website
(http://fvap.gov/vao/stregissites.html), or follow up directly with
your local election officials, to confirm that you are registered.

Voting
Your local voting officials should mail your absentee ballot 30 to 45
days before the November 4 general election. Return your voted ballot
as early as possible. Be aware of your state's ballot receipt
deadline, as well as any postmarking requirements.

Emergency Ballots
The Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB) serves as an emergency
ballot for voters who registered in time but fail to receive an
official ballot from local election officials. Please note: You must
register to vote and request an absentee ballot by your state's
deadline - usually 30 days before the election - to be eligible to use
the FWAB. We strongly recommend that voters who have not received
their ballot by October 15 complete and return the FWAB to ensure your
vote is received in time to be counted.

Questions?
The official U.S. government website for overseas voters is the
Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website at www.fvap.gov.
The Voting Assistance Officer at the United States Consulate in

Guadalajara is also always available to answer questions about
absentee voting.

To contact the Voting Assistance Officer, call (011 52 33 3268 2273)
or send an e-mail to (acsgdl@state.gov).

From the Turtle Association:
Please participate in the conservation and protection of endangered
marine sea turtles found in all oceans and beaches of Mexico. In
Nayarit State, sea turtle nesting season is underway June through
December. Females come ashore, primarily at night to excavate a nest,
lay their eggs and bury them before returning to sea. Male turtles
remain at sea. All six species of sea turtles, which nest in Mexico,
are endangered worldwide. The reproduction of baby sea turtles is
critical to their survival. Your support during the turtle
reproductive season is very important.

If you see a turtle on the beach:

Turn off all lights (flashlights, lighters, and spotlights) that could
disturb the sea turtle as she arrives on the beach or is leaving the
beach after she lays her eggs. Reduce ambient noise, distinguish
cigarettes, and minimize activity in the vicinity of the turtle.

Control dogs and children.
If you see a turtle on the beach, do not touch her, stay at least 15
feet away, and let her finish laying her eggs undisturbed before she
returns to sea.

Sea turtles are frightened of light flash from cameras, do not take
photographs or shine flashlights into their eyes.

During sea turtle nesting season, minimize bonfires on the beach.

If you walk on the beach at night with a flashlight, place a red
filter over the light to reduce the brightness. Turn off outdoor
lights or face lights downward or use amber light bulbs to reduce
glare.

If you find sea turtle hatchlings on the beach, do not keep in
captivity or put directly into the ocean. They need to be placed on
the sand above the high tide line facing the waves so they can scuttle
into the ocean across the sand into the oncoming surf. This journey
is critical as they imprint on their natal beach and will return to
lay their own eggs as adults. Ensure that all baby turtles enter the
ocean in this manner.

Do not relocate or move any nest contents. Only biologists permitted
by SEMARNAT/CONANP to manage sea turtle programs are authorized to
work with turtles during the nesting season.

Do not acquire or consume eggs or any products derived from the sea turtles.
Keep the beaches clean. Do not throw garbage into ocean, especially
plastic bags because sea turtles confuse them for food. Motorized ATV
and vehicle use is prohibited on nesting beaches year around.

Denounce harmful acts against sea turtles to the Authorities to
PROFEPA. To be in possession of sea turtles or sea turtle products,
including eggs is a federal crime which can result in incarceration
from six months up to six years and economic fines from 1,000 to
50,000 pesos.

For more information on the Mexican governmental branches authorizing
sea turtle protection, conservation, and enforcement programs, see:

Keeping Up With Developments In Riviera Nayarit.

It is difficult to keep up with what going on in Riviera Nayarit with all the activity and the new resorts/developments. So I was fortunate to spend last weekend in the RIU Vallarta resort in Nuevo Vallarta with Marc Talon from DeveloperDirect. Marc invited me to a properties "showcase". Developer Direct screens for the best investment opportunities and provides information for buying and/or retirement in the Riviera Nayarit.
I flew in on Thursday, checked in, and then met for cocktails with the DeveloperDirect folks and the other people that were there for the preview. It started a get to know each other cocktails then a bay sunset cruise and then dinner.
The next the morning we met in the hotel conference room for breakast and soak up all the information from Developer Direct's strategic partners. And there was a wealth of information with topics including health care, title insurance, taxes, investing, renting, financing and an overview of the developments to be toured later in the afternoon.
Around 2:00 we toured four Grupo Real Del Mar developments. La Joya condos, Punta Esmeralda, Real Del Mar and Alamar, all in the La Cruz. About 40 of us gathered in the lobby and boarded the bus for the tour. We saw everything from finished $2 million homes to $250 thousand condos. Something for all levels investment and ownership.
That night we had our own "fiesta night" on the beach with dinner and Puerto Vallarta entertainment. Great fun.
The next morning we reviewed what we covered and toured the day before. We met with the Grupo Real Del Mar developer for a Q&A. Charles reviewed the tremendous forces coming together in Riviera Nayarit that all add up to great oppotunities. Then we broke up, so DeveloperDirect could help folks focus on what properties interests them. That afternoon was free time to enjoy the resort or go explore.
For an intensive education on owning Mexico it was the best three days I have ever spent.

The cementing of Lazaro Cardenas continues. They have completed most
three blocks, from Las Palmas to Javier Mina. It is a nice design,
resembling large flat stones. They are adding some colored powder to
the cement. No telling how much of that will show. At this time, it
is all covered in several layers of dust.

Enjoy the summer!

New Immigration Office in Bucerias

Hola,

Apparently, immigration is going to open an office here in Bucerias.
It will be located on Ave. Las Palmas, next to the new copy/internet
place called Airdoggiecito. Reuben assures me that he will stock all
the necessary forms you might need for immigration issues. Let us
hope that this office is permanent. A few years ago, they opened one
here, moved it 3 or 4 times in as many months, then closed it and
returned to Tepic.

Eva's Brickhouse, Calle Galeana, Bucerias, is now open for breakfast,
lunch and dinner and is air conditioned. They are offering eggs, any
style, with hash browns, for 39 pesos; Eggs Benedict for 69 pesos;
all kind of omelets, juices, pancakes etc. For lunch, they now have
more salads and deli sandwiches, and, for dinner, they have added
Filet Mignon with Bearnaise Sauce and Surf and Turf, Filet Mignon and
sauteéd shrimp.

La Lomita, Agustin Melgar 22, Bucerias, has opened a sushi bar in the patio.

The Puerto Vallarta Jewish Community is making plans for the High Holy
Days!!
For the very first time, there are plans in process for celebrating
Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur here, and other Jewish occasions as well. We have
been most fortunate in that the Chabad Head office and Rabbi Srugo
from Guadalajara
have offered to send back to us, the same two young Rabbis that
conducted our Passover services and songs. They will arrive from the
USA here before Rosh Hashanah, which is September 29 and conduct the
services of this Holyday and also Yom Kippur, which is October 8th.

Litibu... Fonatur development

Litibu, Nayarit. Mexican Riviera.
4.14.08
After driving by the entrance gates to the Litibu (Fonatur) development many times I finally got in to take a look. The development sits between Punta Mita and Sayulita. Litibu sits
from Punta Negra at the south end for all most 2 miles along the baygoing north. The Mexico Office of Tourism, development division, has put in all the all infrastructue including a water desalination plant. Then sold partials to major development companies to complete the individual resorts. When fully built it will have 5 major resorts have a total of nearly 4,000 rooms. This is a big deal for Nayarit.
I was previewed the property by Dave Rowland from the La Tranqilla Resort. We jumped in his golf cart and drove the Greg Norman golf course first. Great views, reasonable topography with a couple holes on the ocean. Of course since it is a Norman course, everthing seems first rate. I wanted to play. No dice. It won't be ready for play for another six months.
We viewed the Mexican style shopping center/plaza area. A good idea since most Nayarit resorts don't have convenient real shopping than there own shops. With the re-bar in the ground and going up quickly on the main condos/hotel I got a sense of how the resort lays out.
As you enter the main entrance the mega pool starts and runs through the main building lobby and then coninues as it waterfalls through the grounds of the entire resort as it runs all the way down to the beach and ends the huge infinity pool that sits parallel and directly on the beach. I haven't seen anything quite like this before, very unique.
The wide beach here in Litibu very friendly, Trish and I have been here many times for a day outing. Beautiful aqua blue water, fine white sand, gentle waves and goes for miles. It even has a coral reef at the south end point that has the best snorkleing in the area. My guess maybe a 30 minute walk from the resort.
Still in very early construction. But pre-construction sales are going on. Dave told me that they are very unique in that they have a program to fit virtually any need/want. Full ownership, fractional or hotel. You can now go see it yourself the next time you are in Nayarit.

Mega Comercial Open - Mega hit.

Hooray for Riviera Nayarit!
Mega Comercial is open, just above Mezcales and south of Bucerias. Now if you need to grocery-up on your way to north you can forget about Wal-Mart... and it's on your right.
It still is getting its act together since opening in December, but it sure beats going south of the airport for a large commerical store.

Riviera Nayarit ..... things to do and see.

I spent a week in the month of September last year shooting video. I could of picked a cooler month, actually any month would have been better for hauling around video equipment through the jungle.
But Nayarit is probably the most beautiful that time of the year. The foliage is just
florescent. Shot all the major kinds of activities that bring people here. I am
sure I left some out and will hear from some of you about that. Did what I could in a week.

We started in the south in Nuevo Vallarta and then traveled to Bucerias, Punta Mita, Sayulita, Rincon de Guayabitos, Chacala and finally ended up North in San Blas.

We perched on some iffy spots to get some these shots. I particularly like the time lapse of the afternoon storm clouds. You might want to send a youtube.com link to someone that asks you why you love the place so much.
Check it out.

Exploring Playa Los Ayala and Jaltemba Bay

I went to visit Anna Iabarra in the small town of Los Ayala on the coast just south of Rincon de Guayabitos. hat a find. Beautiful, safe and empty beach, and small town without the congestion and activity of Rincon de Guayabitos. Her husband Cesar showed me around Jaltemba Bay.

Fishing in Banderas Bay with Reel Hot Charter's Tim Steeves

I went out from Punta Mita in December with my brother Cory and his Darcy wife and some friends to find big tuna. We found Dorado and a great time and instead. Which was OK by me. Hey, I 'm on vacation, who wants to pull in a 100 pound tuna anyway. "Way too much work"
Check out the video.

I visited Playa Chacala and Chacalia beach in paradise.....Marina Chacala

I drove about 1:15 hours North of Puerto Vallarta airport, a little past Rincon de Guayabitos to visit Playa Chacala. Adjacent to Chacala was the vacation/home development of Marina Chacala and Chacalia beach. What a spot! You should take a ride if you get a spare 1/2 day, only 60 minutes past Bucerias. 45 minutes past Sayulita.

Talked with Al Melchiorre about "Casa Endless Summer" a home for sale on the beach there. Beautiful. The video is by my brother Cory. Pretty good too.

Mexico and Riviera Nayarit may have answer to U.S. retirees Health Care

Each day, a savvy few join the ranks of retirees living like royalty -- but on tiny budgets. It's a secret most people don't know much about, but easily accessible to most Americans.
The U.S. health care system is out of reach for millions of Americans…and Mexico may have the answer, according to Carlos Slim, Mexican business magnate and second-richest man on the planet.
One of Slim’s companies, Ideal, has purchased a 49% stake in Grupo Star Medica, a Mexican national hospital chain. Plans are underway for new, high-quality medical centers in Mexico to cater to U.S. baby boomers who are buying second homes in Mexico…or who simply want to come to Mexico for cheaper health care than they can find in the United States.
It is estimated that vacation homes sales increased 45%, in Riviera Nayarit in the last three years. Companies like Grupo Star Medica are just filling niches created by those new homeowners and vacationers. "[Baby boomers] are also choosing Mexico because its health system is much cheaper than in the United States.”
And plans are underway to get more U.S. private insurance companies to pay for medical treatment in Mexico. "For a U.S. insurance policy to pay for medical treatment, the treatment has to comply with certain quality control standards, and we are going to participate with products to serve this niche," said Jaime Jimenez, general director for Mexico Trane, another company following Slim’s lead.
It’s hard to blame smart Mexican businessmen for capitalizing on such an obvious opportunity. If the United States hadn’t let its health care system get so bloated and profit-hungry that 40 million Americans can’t even afford health insurance, there wouldn’t be a need to outsource it.
Remember what your dentist used to say? “Ignore your teeth, and they will go away.” Well, the United States has neglected health care reform for so long that its users really are going away…to Mexico!

Fun Events at Riviera Nayarit!

Hola,

We did it again! The fourth Rhythm 'n Ribs brought in over $100,000

there were many of them, worked very hard. As always, they are the
key to the success of this event. Construction of the orphanage is
progressing well. So many people have expressed an interest in
helping that I am sure the building will be finished quickly. A big
thank you to all who participated in Rhythm 'n Ribs. See you again
next year.

Swimmers in Punta Mita

Swimmer’s Restaurant Grand Opening in Punta Mita
December 2007
Sterling and I attended the grand opening of Swimmers Restaurant, which was much anticipated, in December. The buzz around the village had all of the locals speculating on just how good the food would be and if it was going to live up to it’s 5 star décor. Located on the north end of Punta Mita’s restaurant row, it provides another flavor to what is available on the beach. We found it a very enjoyable, delectable evening. Starting with their Miso Salad right up to the last drop of our after dinner liquor, it just couldn’t have been any better. I must admit we were a little skeptical in regards to how the service would be, but that was a very pleasant surprise especially because it was opening night and there were so many diners. I didn’t hear one complaint from anyone. You can enjoy the daytime view for lunch, while watching passing yachts, surfers and maybe even an occasional spouting whale, bathing suits o.k. or dine at night casually. We found it to be a very romantic atmosphere, with its white linen tablecloths and candle light. The Pacific Cuisine created by ultra talented Chef de Cuisine, Oscar Roque, brings a new level of international flavors to our magnificent oceanfront location. It is high on our list and we’ll frequent Swimmer’s when we visit again. For reservations and information reservations@swimmersofpuntademita.com or call 329 29 15418 (local Punta Mita number.)

Mexico's Next Destination: Riviera Nayarit
http://www.fodors.com/

November 11, 2007

If you thought you had to travel all the way to South America to find a beachside getaway where locals outnumber tourists, think again: The beach towns of Riviera Nayarit, north of Puerto Vallarta, may just be your ideal escape. This is where travelers come looking for the Mexico they remember from the 1960s, before mega-resorts crowded the landscape of most coastlines. (But book your trip soon, as more than 30 major hotel projects are now in the works.)

The Nayarit state begins just a few miles north of Puerto Vallarta. It is one of Mexico's least populated states with fewer than 1 million permanent residents (compared to the 6.7 million residents of Jalisco, where Puerto Vallarta is located). Just 10 miles into Nayarit, in the town of Bucerias, the landscape begins to change: all-inclusive resorts thin out, and small boutique hotels start cropping up. Cruise ships are replaced by fishing boats, and chain restaurants give way to beachfront taco shacks.

Sleepy beach towns dot the landscape, and each town has its own charm. Bucerias offers a relaxed, village experience with easy access to the nightlife and shopping of Puerto Vallarta. Further north (an approximate 35-minute drive from Puerto Vallarta) is Sayulita---a bohemian surf town that feels light-years away from Puerto Vallarta. Continue another few miles to reach San Francisco (also called San Pancho), where locals outnumber foreigners, and you feel a real sense of village life. Finally, for a taste of Mexico that's even less influenced by tourism, continue up the coast for another two hours and you'll reach the fishing village of San Blas, which is a world-renowned habitat for migratory birds.

Here, Fodor's shares some of our favorite spots in Nayarit for a secluded beach getaway. For more selections, pick up Fodor's Puerto Vallarta 2008, which covers the region in greater depth.

Bucerias

Food is the focus in this tiny beachfront town. In the town plaza, you can dine off the street, or step inside one of the beachside seafood, tapas (Tapas del Mundo), and Mexican restaurants (Dugarel Plays). For excellent cheap eats, head to the square in the middle of town and check out the local vendors selling birria (spicy goat stew) tacos from a hand-driven cart, or shaved ice with homemade guava syrup from the back of a truck. If you're in a celebratory mood, one of the area's finest restaurants, the Mediterranean-accented Mark's Bar & Grill, is a short drive away.

South of the square, you'll find rows of street vendors hawking t-shirts and handicrafts. Other than that, there's not much shopping. Come here if you want a local village vibe, and for proximity to the shopping and nightlife of Puerto Vallarta. Lodging options are limited, but Hotel Palmeras is a great, low-key bet, just a block from the beach, with rooms under $100 a night. For something more upscale, head north of town to Villa Bella (photo, top), a gorgeous hillside property overlooking the town of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

Sayulita

If you want to watch surfers working the waves as you recline on a rented chaise lounge, Sayulita is the place to do it. Along with surfers, you'll find toned twentysomethings and young families ruling the scene, eating at casual restaurants (Choco Banana and Si Hay Olitas) and hanging out at outdoor bars and ceviche joints that line the beachfront.

This town is slightly larger than neighboring villages, with more dining and lodging options, most of them budget oriented. Our favorite place to stay is the rustic-chic Villa Amor, a gorgeous property that climbs up a hillside with spectacular views and indoor-outdoor living spaces.

San Francisco

If you're looking for something a bit more remote than Sayulita, head a few miles further up the coastline to San Francisco (also called San Pancho), where the presence of Americans and international travelers feels more minimal.

There may be fewer restaurants (the best are La Ola Rica and Mar Plata) and bars (try La Casita de Gallo), but travelers gain a sense of solitude walking along desolate beaches. When you're this far north of Puerto Vallarta, locals outnumber foreigners by at least two-to-one. It's a great place to practice your Spanish, and to decompress from your busy life.

For a romantic getaway, try the intimate Casa Obelisco (photo, right), a B&B north of the village in a luxurious estate. For simpler lodgings in the village, check out Hotel Cielo Rojo, a recently renovated boutique hotel with spare but tasteful décor.

San Blas

Furthest away from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Vallarta, San Blas is a fishing town and agricultural center that's home to approximately 12,000 people. Birding enthusiasts from around the world come here to spot some of the 300 migratory birds that spend their winters here. The area also offers ecotourism adventures like mangrove swamp boat rides, whale watching, surfing, and hiking in the jungle and along the beaches.

The most upscale hotel is Garza Canela, a compound near the beach that houses several two- and three-story buildings flanked by beautifully manicured gardens, a pool, and a small chapel. The property is operated by a family of dedicated bird-watchers, and also offers the best dining experience in town, at El Delphin.

If you want to stay in the center of the village, we recommend Hacienda Flamingos, a mansion-turned-hotel that looks like it was plucked from the set of a Frida Kahlo biopic. Just down the street, try local seafood at La Isla, including grilled shrimp, octopus, oysters, clams and red snapper. Afterwards, walk over to the main plaza, where vendors sell ice cream cones and villagers gather in the evenings to talk about the day's events.
